I pushed through some initial resistance the other day. I had been planning a new projects for weeks now, but I hadn’t started.
Sure, I planned it. I looked at it from many angles and analyzed it until my eyes glazed over, but I didn’t start it.
Last week I wrote about a subscriber who needed a kick in the butt. The kick for most people is overcome the fear of “making a mistake” and taking action. You may believe that making a mistake is ‘messy’ and ‘doesn’t look good.’
Nothing happens without action.
When I look at my own life, I see a lot of mistakes and a lot of messes being made. Which means there’s a lot of evidence of taking action.
When I built my first multi-million dollar business, I made many, many mistakes. There were messes everywhere.
In looking back, I doubt I would have been so successful in that or other endeavors without allowing myself to make a mess.
I upset people I cared about, I lost customers, money and time. I spent huge amounts of energy cleaning up the consequences of some of my actions.
And, I don’t think I would have been successful without doing all of those things, good and bad.
It’s been my experience that success is rarely a straight line. It’s filled with many zigs, zags and loop-de-loops.
It’s part of success, just like turning your steering wheel is part of driving.
It’s not the mess we’re afraid of…
Okay, it may seem obvious to you, but for years I didn’t realize this. I thought I was just really concerned about doing a good job. I didn’t understand that underneath that ‘concern’ was fear.
Fear
Fear is the anticipation of pain. What could cause me to fear making mistakes and leaving a mess?
Over time, I realized I was afraid of failing. That seems easy enough.
But it turned out it was more than that. It wasn’t just fear of failure, it’s what others, and especially myself, will think of me if I fail. That’s the biggie.
As I got more comfortable making mistakes and leaving a mess, my level of success grew. That’s why my first business achieved revenue in its 12th month of $101,000 – for one month.
All Because…
Of my messes. Seriously, the more accepting I am of making a mess today, the more my success grows.
I have no doubt that today, tomorrow and into the future, I’m going to upset people, lose customers, lose money and waste some time. I hope to do less of it than I have in the past.
But, I understand that mistakes, and messes, are vital to success. You can’t have one without the other.
So, go out today and make a mess. A really big mess.
Try something, take action. Then, tomorrow, review what you did today. What worked, what didn’t and make another mess. You have my permission.
Pretty soon, you’ll be experiencing success beyond your wildest dreams.
