When I was first starting out in coaching, I had an advantage in getting more clients. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I didn’t care.
I knew I could help people, so i just jumped in and started helping them.
I didn’t worry about taglines, elevator speeches or business cards, I just started telling people what i did, asked about them, and let them know how I could help.
That approach served me while I learned more about the industry, competition and who I wanted to work with.
In the years since, I’ve learned quite a bit about getting clients and building businesses.
I’ve also had the honor of working with thousands of others attempting to do the same thing.
You probably aren’t that comfortable just jumping in without knowing what to say, or even when or how to say it. I can understand that.
Getting In Front of Clients
Putting yourself out there takes courage and a certain amount of willingness to be “rejected.”
What I learned over time was there were a few key activities I needed to focus on to develop my practice and add clients.
I needed to act on a consistent basis, because I found over time, the first few months are the hardest.
Add to this the emotional toll of not being awarding business or getting new clients – and you have some powerful forces working against you.
For me, I needed a strong, compelling vision that would help me get out of bed in the morning.
This vision was based on a strong burning desire, not some sense of obligation or need.
I needed to stay focused on that vision and take effective actions.
When obstacles rose in my path, I had to be strong enough to work work through them and persist.
And after all that, I had to know how to profitably grow a business.
I won’t say it was easy to get so many clients that I had to create a waiting list – but I will say it was rewarding.
