When it comes to marketing online, I am frequently asked what the best blogging software is.
It’s really about; what’s the best way to manage my online business?
Not all my clients are established businesses that can afford full-time web people.
Many are solopreneurs or other small business owners that have to do many of the tasks themselves.
Attorneys, massage therapists, coaches or the dozens of other professionals and industries I work with, are mostly dealing with the basics of online marketing and website management.
The Good News
When I put up my first website years ago, it costs me around $5,000 and weeks of back-and-forth with developers. That was, and still is, a lot of money.
The good news is you can have a website (and blog) up and running in 5 minutes, for less than $10 per month.
I’m not promoting a site by saying that, it’s just that I know you could go out godaddy, hostgator or a whole lot of other providers, buy a domain for about $10 per year, plus hosting for about $5-10 per month.
That’s about $100 per year.
What about the Site/Blog?
Once you have the domain and hosting account, you go into the cPanel (Control Panel) of your hosting account. If you don’t know what a cPanel is, don’t worry, once you get hosting, you’d be sent an email with access to your cPanel to deal with some of the particulars of your site.
Inside the cPanel, you will probably find Fantastico. This is a commercial script library that automates the installation of web applications to a website.
Inside Fantastico, you can install the perfect content management system to set up your website and start blogging.
What Software?
While I talk about different content management systems to run a website in the resource guide, I find that most people should just set up WordPress. It’s free, easy and very flexible and clearly the best blogging software available. It truly has revolutionized the Internet. And for most of you, having a blog attached to your website, or part of it, should be part of your online marketing strategy.
You can install it with a few clicks inside Fantastico and have your site up within minutes.
Again, total cost of about $100 per year.
With that out of the way, just focus a little each day, and each week to learn more about WordPress.
As I explained to a client the other day, just start working your way down the left hand side of your WordPress dashboard and learn what each item is, and what the best settings are. You’re learn about posts, media, links, pages, comments, plugins and how to pick a theme. There are thousands of free and for-fee themes. My favorite themes are here and here.
There are guides out there, YouTube videos and a host of other resources.
The trick is just doing a little each week. It’s doubtful you’ll master it in a week, just little steps.
But Do This
While you’re learning all about WordPress, don’t wait to start posting, start posting right away.
The first reason is that Google and the other search engines love fresh, relevant content.
The second, and more important reason, is that it helps you practice and refine your messaging.
Review your posts weekly. If you find yourself writing about saving the whales in Antarctica one day, then success principles the next, followed by a family vacation the next, you may want to focus a little more.
Sharing your message takes time and practice. Get clear and concise and you’ll see your results skyrocket.
Try to be all things to all people, and you’ll end up being nothing to no one – sorry.
Get Going
Regardless of any technological resistance you may have, get posting content. Play with your site, break it a few times – I know I have, sometimes calling my web guy in a panic.
It’s okay, it’s part of the process.
If you have a site with something other than WordPress, and it’s a pain to manage, or you have to keep paying someone to touch it, you may want to consider converting to WordPress and learning how to post articles and videos.
In my opinion, WordPress is the best blogging software out there. It’ll save you time, and from my experience, facilitate you sharing more information. Go try it today.
